  • Mo Cortez is a trans and intersex activist in Houston, Texas. He speaks about his activism, his childhood, and his own personal story with unconsentual/forced genital surgery as a child.

  • “I wouldn’t ‘come out’ as intersex until a friend of mine invited me to speak on [that] panel,” Cortez, 35, recalls. “For whatever reason, the parents in attendance at that event were upset hearing about my story.”

  • SB 1342 is necessary in combating laws like SB 4, Cortez says, noting that—as of today—the U.S. has no protections for intersex people. Matla and Chile are the only other countries where intersex protective policies such as SB 1342 have been considered.
